Session description:

The discussion section is often one of the most challenging parts of a thesis or journal article to write well.

This workshop will guide you through what makes a strong, well-structured discussion—and help you apply those principles to your own writing.

The session will begin with an overview of what writing experts and disciplinary conventions say about the purpose, structure, and scope of the discussion. We’ll look at what to include (and what to avoid), and how expectations can vary across disciplines and genres.

From there, you’ll work closely with examples from your own field—deconstructing well-written discussion sections from journal articles or theses you've brought along. In the final part of the workshop, you'll apply what you've learned to your own work.

Please bring: a laptop, at least one journal article (or thesis) from your discipline with a well-written discussion section, and any draft discussion writing you've started.
