2024 Three Minute Thesis (3MT)

An 80,000 word PhD thesis would take 9 hours to present. Your time limit... 3 minutes.

The Graduate Research School and Researcher Development Unit are thrilled to announce the UOW Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is happening again in 2024! Developed by the University of Queensland, the 3MT competition celebrates the dynamic research conducted by Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates. This prestigious and world-renowned competition is an invaluable exercise in the importance of communication and presentation skills.

This year's UOW 3MT competition is going to be bigger and better than ever. The 2024 3MT competition will take us back to pre-pandemic times, where candidates will present their thesis LIVE in 3 minutes (no more recordings!)

This year, 3MT will also be part of a larger program developed to improve research communication skills in graduate researchers. To learn more about the UOW 3MT Program Events or to register your interest in participating in the UOW 3MT Faculty Heats, click the button below.

HDR Fair Game: Breakfast with the Vice-Chancellor

The Graduate Research School has introduced an initiative called HDR Fair Game where candidates can earn points by engaging in development activities and then can utilise these points to receive a range of privileges. To learn more about the HDR Fair Game program, click here.

Forthcoming reward: Breakfast with the Vice-Chancellor

As one possible reward, candidates will be granted the opportunity to attend a forthcoming breakfast with the Vice-Chancellor of UOW, Patricia Davidson.  Besides a free breakfast, this opportunity enables you to meet Professor Davidson who can offer great support and wise insights about research, academia, and life in general.

  • Date & Time: June 5, 8:30AM
  • Location: UOW Wollongong campus (details will be provided to invited candidates).

If you are interested, please email graduateresearch-training@uow.edu.au.

In this email, you can either:

  • Specify the number of hours of peer assistance and professional development you have completed outside your discipline—together with some evidence, such as outlines of what you learned or certificates OR
  • Outline why you feel this opportunity could be especially valuable to you.

If the number of interested candidates exceeds 8, to choose who to invite, we will consider the number of points you have earned or the importance of this opportunity to you.
