HDR Induction: 19-20 February, 2024

The Graduate Research School recently hosted a 2-day HDR Induction for incoming candidates. Over 100 in-person and online candidates attended, with 16 presentations designed to give candidates the tools they need to begin their research journey with confidence and clarity. Candidates were able to learn about how to start their HDR journey well and get to know some of their peers.

All sessions from the 2-day event were recorded and have been uploaded for candidates to view on the Higher Degree Research Development Hub Moodle site

HDR Festival: 5-7 February, 2024

In February 2024 the Graduate Research School ran the first ever HDR Festival for Higher Degree Research candidates from across the University of Wollongong. The event spanned 3 days and included a number of presentations from knowledgeable and experienced speakers. We had over 150 people register for this event and were so please to have so many HDR candidates join us.

Some of the highlights included a debate on research ethics and integrity, a motivational speech from Distinguished Professor Sharon Robinson, and a presentation from a range of UOW academics on how to take care of yourself as an HDR candidate

Recordings of all sessions from the HDR Festival are now available on the Higher Degree Research Development Hub Moodle site

Thesis Writing Boot Camp: 19-21 January, 2024

The beginning of the year say the Graduate Research School host its first HDR Thesis Writing Boot Camp for 2024. Across a weekend in January, 30 HDR candidates committed themselves to write intensely for 3 full days.

The boot camp consisted of several 'deep work' writing sessions, broken up by food and activity breaks to re-energise and motivate attendees. On the Friday, we were also joined by Dr Linda Hodson and Dr Anne Hellwig from Learning Development who assisted students with writing issues and questions.

By the end of the weekend, candidates had written thousands of words and smashed out their goals for the weekend. The boot camp fostered a strong connection between attendees and brought candidates one strep closer to submitting their final theses.

Many students in attendance at our Thesis Writing Boot Camp are in the final stages of their thesis writing and are working towards submission in the coming months. As a more regular form of accountability and encouragement, the Training and Development team run a program called Writers that Finish (WTF) for candidates within the final 6 months of their candidature. This group provides a unique system of support for candidates experiencing the final 'crunch' of the PhD. If you are in the final 6 months of your candidature and are interested in joining the WTF program, please email the Training and Development team at graduateresearch-training@uow.edu.au expressing your interest.
